Being a woman in 2023 presents challenges due to a toxic social media environment that pressures us to “rebrand” ourselves into the “aesthetic” that is popular, causing us to further categorize ourselves and treat our personalities and looks as a marketable product that changes to keep up with the trends. Women who have been ignored or treated like a nuisance by men who they have a familial, professional, romantic, or friendly relationship with sometimes exhibit behaviors that cause people to label them as “attention whores” or “pick-me girls”. Why do we shame and mock these women for learning how to be seen and heard by these people? Why do the women get laughed at instead of the men who push them to these social survival techniques? Why do women constantly want to prove that they are superior to other “types” of women? In my one-person show Attention Whore I aim to raise these questions to audience members through a memorable and entertaining stand-up comedy show.
